Chelsea transfers: Five players who could join the Blues this summer
Chelsea transfers: The Sport Review takes a look at five transfer targets who could be heading to Stamford Bridge
After already missing out on their top transfer target Radamel Falcao this summer, Chelsea are understood to be keen to prise Edinson Cavani away from Napoli. The Uruguay international has also been linked with Manchester City and Arsenal in recent months but the Blues are thought to be leading the Premier League chase for the forward. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis this week confirmed that Chelsea have expressed an interest in signing the 26-year-old, who has a £53.5m release clause in his contract. The player himself, however, is thought to favour a move to Real Madrid.
This deal looks set to be done and dusted in the coming weeks. The Bayer Leverkusen forward has long been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge and new boss Mourinho is keen to continue the Blues’ interest in the 22-year-old and push through a deal. It was claimed last week that an agreement between the two clubs had been reached in principal, with Kevin De Bruyne heading to Leverkusen on loan – but those reports appear to have been premature. Nevertheless, expect Schürrle to become a Chelsea player before next season.
The Blues have reportedly reignited their interest in Brazilian forward Hulk, with the latest stories claiming that the west Londoners have already tabled a £35m bid for the Zenit Saint-Petersburg forward. Chelsea were in for the 26-year-old forward last summer but failed to agree a deal with Porto. The striker, who is also a target for Tottenham, is now high on Jose Mourinho’s wish-list since the Portuguese coach returned to Stamford Bridge. And when asked this week if there is any truth in the recent reports linking him with Chelsea, Hulk cryptically replied: “If I said there wasn’t anything in it, I would be lying.”
Speculation linking the Netherlands international with Chelsea has heightened this week in the wake of Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge. Sneijder was a key part of the Inter Milan side that Mourinho led to an historic Treble back in 2010 and is open to the idea of linking up with his former boss in west London after a disappointing start to his spell at Turkish side Galatasaray. The reports over the 28-year-old’s future were largely triggered by his admission this week that he still keeps in touch with Mourinho, but whether the Blues would actually be willing to make a move for the playmaker remains to be seen.
The Germany international is another player thought to be high on Mourinho’s shopping list this summer, with Chelsea said to be lining up a £25m bid for the Bayern Munich forward. The 27-year-old is set to leave the Champions League winners this summer after failing to hold down a regular starting spot this term. Chelsea are said to be competing with Manchester City and Napoli for Gómez’s signature but Mourinho is believed to want a strong physical presence up front and sees the forward, who has scored 113 goals in 174 appearances for Bayern, as the ideal man for the job.
