Chelsea transfers: Mourinho wants me to mature at Atletico – Courtois
Chelsea transfers: Thibaut Courtois says he has Jose Mourinho's blessing to return to Atletico Madrid on loan for a third season
Thibaut Courtois says he has Jose Mourinho’s blessing to return to Atletico Madrid on loan for a third successive season.
The Chelsea goalkeeper, 21, has impressed for the Copa del Rey winners after filling the void left by Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea in 2011.
The Belgium international, who has leapfrogged Simon Mignolet as his country’s first-choice goalkeeper, has previously expressed his desire to stay in Madrid.
And Courtois claims the Blues, who announced Mourinho’s return last week, have allowed the shot stopper to spend a third season on loan at Vicente Calderón Stadium.
“I’ve chosen to stay at Atletico,” said Courtois.
“I have to continue playing and at Chelsea there’s [Petr] Cech who has always been a great goalkeeper.
“At Atletico I’m sure I can play and I can continue to be the first-choice keeper of the Red Devils [Belgium].
“In the course of the season, we will see if I return to London.”
He added: “I spoke with Mourinho and he told me the best thing is to continue maturing.”
Courtois is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea after completing a move to Stamford Bridge from Genk in 2011.
