Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has reaffirmed his inflexible position towards selling star striker Edinson Cavani.

After telling the striker to resolve his future before 20 July, he has now claimed that he has nothing to say to the forward, who he insists will not be sold for any less than his €63m buy-out clause.

“It’s not necessary for me to speak to Cavani in person,” De Laurentiis said in response to the player’s comments after Uruguay’s defeat by Brazil on Wednesday.

The striker remarked: “I love Naples, it’s my city and it holds a place in my heart, but while I’ve been in Brazil I’ve heard false rumours and things said about me. That’s why I want to speak to president De Laurentiis as soon as possible. We need to sort this out amongst ourselves. I’ll talk to him man to man as soon as I can.”

De Laurentiis continued: “There is a buy-out clause. The time will come when a club will put €63m on the table, and then we won’t be able to hold on to him anymore.

“If the right offer arrives, fine, if it doesn’t, Cavani will stay in Italy and Rafael Benítez, like everyone else at Napoli, will be very happy.”

Cavani is wanted by Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City, but it is believed that the Bernabéu club’s interest in the striker has died down recently due to his high price, and they are considering moving for his compatriot Luis Suárez instead.

De Laurentiis claimed “no-one has called me to make me an offer” for Cavani, but confessed that he had held a meeting with Manchester City, before revealing “they didn’t have the financial will to close the deal”.
