Eastbourne 2013: Brave Kyle Edmund beaten by Gilles Simon

Eastbourne 2013: Britain's Kyle Edmund beaten by Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) in the second round

British teenager Kyle Edmund produced a gutsy display against the experienced Frenchman Gilles Simon before eventually going down 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) at Eastbourne.

The promising 18-year-old was defeated on his senior tour debut at Queen’s last week but captured his first ATP World Tour-level victory against French qualifier Kenny De Schepper at the Aegon International on Monday.

Despite a battling performance, Edmund, one of seven Brits to be awarded wildcards for Wimbledon, was unable to cause an upset against the 16th seed in the second round at Devonshire Park.

Edmund said: “I put everything out there, and it was a really good match. Even though I lost, I was still very pleased with the way I played.

“He’s 16 in the world and I got pretty close, so confidence-wise it’s massive for me.

“I didn’t feel uncomfortable out there, so I think that’s a big positive knowing that when I do go out there I don’t have to overplay or play special.”

The young Brit didn’t look out of place on Centre Court epitomised by his ability to bounce back when Simon broke in the seventh game.

Second seed Simon was made to work hard for the victory as Edmund engineered a set point in the 10th game, only for the Frenchman to hold serve and take the set by sneaking the tie-break.

The impressive teenager was eventually defeated in another tie-breaker as Simon evaded a shock defeat, as Edmund turns his attentions towards Wimbledon.

He added: “Whoever I get it’s obviously going to be a tough match, because I’m 440 in the world, and most of them are top 100.

“If I get a tough draw I can compete with them and have a chance of winning.

“I know I’m going to have put my game out there on court like I did these last three matches here.”
