Everton transfers: Jonny Heitinga says wants a return to the Eredivisie and he isn't sure whether he will sign a new Toffees deal a
Johnny Heitinga says he could leave Everton to seal a return to the Eredivisie before hanging up his boots.
The Netherlands international struggled to hold down a regular spot in the Toffees first-team last season, making just 17 Premier League starts.
The 29-year-old, who joined Everton from Atletico Madrid in 2009, had been linked with a new deal at the Goodison Park outfit.
New Everton manager Roberto Martínez has been linked with a move for free agent Antolin Alcaraz, and Heitinga is weighing up a move away from England.
“I’ve had my worst season since I joined,” Heitinga said.
“I don’t want to extend my contract because it would mean they’d be my final club outside Holland.
“I have played in Spain and England, so maybe it’s time for somewhere else.”
Heitinga has scored four goals in 135 appearances for Everton after completing a £6.2m move to the Toffees from Atletico in 2009.
The Netherlands international, capped 87 times, started his career at Ajax and won two Dutch top-flight titles before moving to Spain.
