French Open 2013: Maria Sharapova pleased with her "focus" after reaching quarter-finals with win over Sloane Stephens
Maria Sharapova was pleased with her “focus” after reaching the French Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets win over Sloane Stephens.
The defending champion sealed a 6-4 6-3 triumph against the American 17th seed on Philippe Chatrier Court to set up a last-eight clash with Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic.
Sharapova had beaten Stephens 6-2 6-1 at the Italian Open last 16 in Rome last month and the Russian was expecting her opponent to be fired up after that loss.
“I’m sure she was geared up,” Sharapova said. “Especially when you lose a couple of weeks ago, you want a bit of revenge.
“I’m sure she had that type of feeling going into our match. And also it’s Roland Garros, and the conditions are tricky as well, so that played a part in it. Patience was really important. We had a few freaky points, a few shanks.
“But overall I was happy with the way I focused most of the match.”
