It took five minutes! Mourinho didn’t think twice about Chelsea return
Jose Mourinho reveals his return to Chelsea was all but sealed within just five minutes of meeting Blues owner Roman Abramovich
Jose Mourinho has revealed that his return to Chelsea was all but sealed within just five minutes of meeting Blues owner Roman Abramovich.
The 50-year-old was appointed as manager at Stamford Bridge for a second time on Monday after signing a four-year contract with the club he led to six trophies between 2004 and 2007.
“I’m very happy,” Mourinho told Chelsea TV. “I had to prepare myself to not be too emotional at my arrival at the club but obviously I’m very happy.
“It was an easy decision. I met the owner and I think in five minutes and after a couple of very short but pragmatic questions we decided straight away.
“I asked the boss: ‘do you want me back?’ and he asked me: ‘do you want to come back?’ and I think in a couple of minutes the decision was made.”
“I think we are ready to marry again and to be happy and successful again.”
Mourinho left Chelsea by mutual consent in September 2007 before taking the reins at Inter Milan in June 2008.
The Portuguese coach led the Serie A club to two league titles and a Champions League triumph before taking over at Real Madrid and winning the Copa del Rey and La Liga crown.
And Mourinho believes that the time is right to renew his “marriage” with the west London club.
“I never hide that in my career in football I had two great passions, Inter and Chelsea, and Chelsea is more than important for me,” he continued.
“It was very hard to play against Chelsea, I did it twice which was not so bad. Now I promise exactly the same things I promised in 2004, but with the difference we have [now], which is I am one of you.”
He added: “It [his departure in 2007] was a difficult moment because I love it here and I have a big connection with the club.
“But if you analyse it in a cool way and leave emotions apart I think it was fantastic because in my career after that I had what I was aiming for.
“Chelsea won important trophies after that, had important moments in the history of the club and now we are back together and I think we get together in a great moment for both.”
Mourinho will be officially unveiled to the media at a news conference at Stamford Bridge next Monday.
