Jose Mourinho reveals that he plans to hold talks with Fernando Torres and Juan Mata when the Spain pair return to Chelsea
Jose Mourinho has revealed that he plans to hold talks with Fernando Torres and Juan Mata when the pair return to Chelsea from international duty with Spain.
Torres’s future has been a source of speculation due to the striker’s inconsistent form since joining the Blues, while Mata has been linked with a transfer away from Stamford Bridge in recent days despite being voted the club’s player of the year last season.
Mourinho, however, insists that he will speak to both players when they return from the Confederations Cup – but still refused to give any assurances over their futures in west London.
“While Fernando, Juan Mata and Cesar Azpilicueta are with the national team I don’t want to contact them as I don’t want to be misinterpreted,” said Mourinho.
“I have to wait until the end of the Confederations Cup, after that I will speak with him [Torres].
“He [Torres] is a Chelsea player, he has a contract and he expressed himself already and said he wants to stay and work hard. He deserves that respect from me and from the club especially.
“The respect starts with speaking to him face to face and deciding what is best for all of us. If the best for all of us is for Fernando to stay then we will help him and get the best out of him.”
Torres scored 22 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last season – his best return since joining the club from Liverpool in a £50m deal back in January 2011.
