Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham will be in a position to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Spurs were beaten to fourth place by Arsenal on the final day of the season as they were forced to settle for fifth and a Europa League place next term.

But Mourinho is expecting the north Londoners to continue to fight it out at the top of the table under Andre Villas-Boas, who worked under the newly-appointed Chelsea boss during his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

“Tottenham had a very good period with Harry [Redknapp], reaching fourth and playing Champions League, going up and up and up,” said Mourinho.

“Andre [Villas-Boas] did a good job by keeping them at that level and they have conditions to fight for the Premier League, not just for a Champions League spot.

“Who’s going to be first? Who’s going to be sixth? I don’t know, but for sure, of the more important leagues, it is the one with the most contenders.”

Mourinho was unveiled as Chelsea boss on Monday after signing a four-year contract with the west Londoners.
