Juan Mata admits he was surprised to hear about the speculation linking him with a transfer away from Chelsea following Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The Spanish playmaker, who scored 20 goals and made 35 assists for the Blues in all competitions last season, has seen his future come under the spotlight in recent weeks following Mourinho’s return to the club.

Mata has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers since his move to west London from Valencia back in August 2011 and was voted the club’s player of the season last term.

And the 25-year-old has revealed his surprise at hearing the reports suggesting that his future at the club is far from secure.

“I don’t know where that came from,” Mata told AS.

“The last time I spoke with the club they told me I was a very important player to them and transmitted confidence in me.”

“I’m sure Mourinho will want to see everyone first and then decide what he wants to do.”

Mata also said that he is looking forward to working with new boss Mourinho next season following the Portuguese coach’s return to west London on a four-year deal.

He added: “You have to know people first before you can evaluate them. After the holidays and after I’ve rested I’ll meet the new boss and I’m sure things will go well.”
