‘Liverpool should cash in on Luis Suárez if they have a replacement’
Former Liverpool defender Rob Jones says the Reds should sell Luis Suárez if they get a big offer and have a replacement lined up
Liverpool should sell Luis Suárez if they receive a big offer and have a replacement lined up, according to former Reds defender Rob Jones.
The 26-year-old striker has been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks after the Uruguayan expressed his desire for a “change of environment”.
Suárez’s spell on Merseyside has been riddled with controversy since his transfer form Ajax in January 2011 – and the South American forward last month revealed that his family aren’t happy in Liverpool.
And Jones believes that Liverpool could have already gotten the best out of Suárez, saying that the Reds should consider cashing in on their talisman for a big fee.
“He’s done really well for Liverpool,” Jones told The Sport Review.
“But over the past two seasons Luis Suárez hasn’t really had a break. I’m just wondering if is he due an injury.
“If Liverpool are offered a big amount for him and Liverpool think they can spend the money wisely on another centre forward, that’s fine.”
Suárez scored an impressive 23 goals in 33 Premier League appearances last season before he was banned for 10 games after biting Branislav Ivanović in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in April.
The Real Madrid target penned a long-term deal with the Merseyside outfit last August, and Jones expects manager Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre to hold talks with Suárez following Uruguay’s Confederations Cup exit on Wednesday.
“The thing with Luis Suárez is that he’s still under contract with Liverpool,” he added.
“Obviously, he’s expressed that he’s not happy and he’s blamed the English press and he says his family aren’t happy in England.
“I think what needs to happen is when he comes back to Liverpool, he’ll have to sit down with Brendan Rodgers and Ian Ayre and express what he’s not happy with. They need to have a good chat and sort it out.”
He added: “But Suárez is under contract, so he’s not going anywhere at the moment.”
