Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel: Jamie Carragher has helped my career
Liverpool's Martin Skrtel says Jamie Carragher has been a big influence on the Slovakia international
Martin Skrtel says retired Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been a big influence on the Slovakian’s career.
The Reds centre-half fell out of favour in the second half of the campaign as Carragher managed to wrestle back a starting spot in Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The 35-year-old made a staggering 737 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, featuring alongside Skrtel regularly over the past four seasons.
And the defender says the former England international has been a great help, as well as current Bayer Leverkusen manager and ex-Reds defender Sami Hyypia.
“I have to say he helped me a lot in my career at Liverpool,” Skrtel told Liverpool’s website. “It was of benefit for me to train with players like him and Sami Hyypia – it was great for me.
“It was his decision to retire and we have to accept it and just wish him luck in his next career.”
Skrtel readily admits the 2012/13 campaign was his worst season after joining the club from Russia’s Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
The Slovakia international revealed the highlight of his Reds career so far has been scoring in their Carling Cup final victory in 2012.
“I think winning the Carling Cup because it was the first medal I won at Liverpool and I scored in the final, so it was that day,” he added.
