‘Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel still one of Premier League’s best defenders’

Jose Enrique has urged Liverpool’s Martin Srktel to stay at Anfield and prove he is still one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

The Slovakia international, by his own admission, experienced his worst season since joining the 18-time English champions in 2008.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Napoli in recent weeks after the Serie A outfit appointed Rafael Benítez as their new manager.

But Enrique pointed out Skrtel was the club’s player of the season in 2011/12 and the Spaniard is confident his team-mate can rediscover his best form.

“Martin didn’t have a great year and found himself on the bench but football can be like that sometimes,” Enrique told the Liverpool Echo.

“I had a tough time myself earlier in the season. Martin was player of the season the year before and we shouldn’t forget that.

“I still think he’s one of the top defenders in the Premier League. If he stays and gets an opportunity again I believe he will prove that.”

Skrtel lost his place in Brendan Rodgers’ starting line-up to Jamie Carragher, who retired in May, in the second half of the season.

And Rodgers has already agreed a deal to sign Manchester City centre-half Kolo Toure on 1 July.
