Liverpool transfers: Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld eyes England move
Liverpool transfers: Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld says he is interested in a move to England or Germany this summer
Toby Alderweireld says he is keen to move to England or Germany amid reported interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
The 24-year-old centre-half has been one of the key players in Ajax’s back-to-back Eredivisie title successes in 2011 and 2012, prompting speculation linking him with a switch to the Premier League.
Alderweireld, who has 25 caps for Belgium, is keen to follow in the footsteps of his compatriots Vincent Kompany and Jan Vertonghen by securing a move to the English top flight.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to find a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher, and Alderweireld says he will only leave Ajax for a big club.
“That is not my preference. England and Germany are the best leagues where I think I can take the next step,” Alderweireld told De Telegraaf.
“I have to go somewhere where I can play football a bit and where my style of play suits.
“On the other hand, I do not want to play for a team at the bottom of their league. I want to leave Ajax for a nice club, otherwise I’ll just stay in Amsterdam.”
Belgium international Alderweireld has scored 15 goals in 181 appearances for Ajax.
