Liverpool transfers: Lucas Leiva admits Luis Suárez's potential departure would be a "great loss" for the Reds
Lucas Leiva has admitted Luis Suárez’s potential departure would be a “great loss” to Liverpool.
The Uruguay international’s Anfield future is in doubt after the 26-year-old expressed his desire to leave the club following a two-and-a-half year spell blighted by controversy.
Liverpool have reiterated their desire to keep Suárez but it has failed to warn off potential suitors, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid among the clubs interested in the forward.
And Lucas, 26, acknowledged the 18-time English champions can ill-afford to lose his fellow South American, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season.
Lucas told Radio Grenal: “Luis Suárez has influenced many matches for us, and is a player, if he leaves, who would be a great loss.”
Suárez is currently on international duty with Uruguay at the Confederations Cup, which kicks off on Saturday night when hosts Brazil face Japan.
And on Friday, the former Ajax forward was adamant that he is only thinking about helping Uruguay win the competition – and not his Liverpool future.
“Here I come to play for Uruguay and not thinking what I can do to benefit a transfer,” Suárez said at a news conference.
“My only goal is to win the cup.”
Suárez has scored 51 goals in 96 appearances for Liverpool after completing a £22.75m move to the Reds from Ajax in January 2011.
