Liverpool transfers: Robbie Fowler hails ‘great’ Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Liverpool transfers: Robbie Fowler backs the Reds' pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Robbie Fowler has backed Liverpool’s pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Armenia international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield and the Reds were reported to have agreed a £23m deal for the playmaker.
Shakhtar, who won the Ukrainian Premier League title last season, deny Mkhitaryan has held talks with the Merseyside outfit despite the midfielder failing report for pre-season training.
And Fowler, who scored 183 goals for Liverpool, has been impressed by Mkhitaryan’s performances in the Champions League.
“Yes, he’s a great player. I’ve seen him a few times in the Champions League,” Fowler told Goal.com.
“He’s a very attacking, very young forward. We’re linked to him. I don’t know if he’s going to sign. I’m sure whoever comes in will be the right fit.”
Brendan Rodgers has already signed Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas, Simon Mignolet and Luis Alberto this summer, and Fowler has been impressed by
“I think the signing of Toure was a very good one,” added Fowler.
“Obviously Jamie Carragher has retired now and, sadly, I don’t think you could ever replace Jamie – he’s that good – but Kolo Toure comes in and he adds plenty of experience, which is what Carra had.
“As for the two Spanish boys [Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas], I think they’re very classic players, technically very, very good.
“Coming to the Premier League, it will be tough but I’m sure Brendan and the rest of the staff have worked on that, what type of players they are.
“It’s exciting times for Liverpool. A mixture of youth and experience. I think the future looks very, very good for Liverpool.”
