Liverpool transfers: Simon Mignolet’s agent hopes for Reds deal
Liverpool transfers: Simon Mignolet's agent Guy Vandermissen says he hopes the Reds can complete a deal for the Belgian
Simon Mignolet’s agent says the Sunderland goalkeeper is hopeful Liverpool can agree a deal with the Black Cats.
The 25-year-old appears to be nearing a switch to the Reds after manager Brendan Rodgers insisted Mignolet would be brought to the club as competition – and not a replacement – for first-choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina on Saturday.
Sunderland are reported to value Mignolet in the region of £11m, and the Belgium international’s agent Guy Vandermissen is optimistic a deal can be completed between all parties to seal his client’s switch to the Reds.
“We hope that there can be a deal and he can go to Liverpool,” Vandermissen said.
“If you go from Sunderland to Liverpool it is a big step forward. You have to make decisions at certain times.”
On Sunday, Reina insisted he would have no problem with Mignolet’s touted arrival and would support the Belgian should he complete a switch to Anfield.
“Every team needs competitors, and when it’s positive it is more than welcome. If it is finally done I’ll welcome him a lot, and anything he needs, I’m here.”
And Vandermissen has insisted the Sunderland goalkeeper won’t have a problem competing with Reina – or any other goalkeeper – for a starting spot in a top Premier League side.
“Goalkeepers only have one position on the field. If you go to a club, you always have competition with the other two goalkeepers,” Vandermissen told The Sport Review.
“When Simon came over to Sunderland, it was obvious at that time that Craig Gordon was in front of him.
“But by working hard, you never know what can happen. He has already proven that he is doing well in the Premier League.
“If you go to a club that is higher in the rankings then there is a lot of good goalkeepers, so you have to go into competition with them.”
