Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet: I’m ambitious like Brendan Rodgers
Liverpool's new goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says he is ambitious like Reds boss Brendan Rodgers after moving to Anfield
Simon Mignolet says he is ambitious like Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and hopes to help the Reds improve their Premier League position next season.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper has signed a long-term deal with Liverpool after completing his much-anticipated move to Anfield from Sunderland for a reported £9m fee.
The Belgium international impressed during his three-year spell at the Stadium of Light, and the former Black Cats goalkeeper is looking forward to working with Rodgers.
“I’ve spoken to him [Rodgers] a few times already and I’m very pleased. He is very ambitious, like I am,” Mignolet told Liverpool’s website.
“Let’s hope we can win a lot of games and finish as high up the table as we can.”
Mignolet, who will compete with Pepe Reina and Brad Jones for a starting spot, made 101 appearances for Sunderland after completing a £2m move to the Stadium of Light from Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden in June 2010.
The Belgian has played for the Black Cats in front of the famous Kop stand at Anfield, and the Reds’ new signing is already excited by the prospect of his debut.
“Even as an away goalkeeper they always applaud you when you run to the Kop,” he added. “I know they appreciate their goalies and hopefully they will appreciate me as a home ‘keeper. I really can’t wait to play in front of them and win matches in front of them.
“I think it will be very special the first moment I step onto the pitch. The first couple of moments I’ll be nervous but I’m sure the fans will get me over that. Hopefully we can keep a lot of clean sheets and get a lot of points – that’s what I’m here for.
“I know they’re very passionate about their club and I know they love and support their goalies, so hopefully they can be behind me and hopefully we can enjoy a lot of wins and trophies together.”
