Man City transfers: Rafael Benítez hopes to keep Edinson Cavani
Man City transfers: Napoli manager Rafael Benítez says he hopes to keep Edinson Cavani at the club beyond the summer
Rafael Benítez says he hopes Edinson Cavani will stay at Napoli beyond the summer amid interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old Uruguay international’s future has been a source of constant speculation in recent weeks, with the striker possessing a £54m release clause in his contract.
Benítez, who was appointed as Walter Mazzarri’s successor earlier this month, is optimistic the South American could remain at the Stadio San Paolo outfit.
“I spoke with Cavani, he’s a very good player and very important for us.
“He is with us, [although] he is doing his work in another tournament at the moment, I hope to see him here. We are waiting to see what he decides.”
On Tuesday, the Napoli striker, who scored 28 top-flight goals in Serie A last season, indicated that his first choice would be a switch to the Bernabeu.
“I am very calm about my future. Madrid are a great club and every player dreams of playing there,” Cavani told Cadena COPE.
“I am a Napoli player for now, though, and I am focused on the Confederations Cup.
“It is not only up to me what the clubs decide. There are other factors that must be taken into account. There’s a lot of talk about Madrid’s interest, so we will see what happens. Nobody has said anything officially.”
