Gareth Bale

Tottenham Hotspur face a battle to keep hold of their talisman Gareth Bale this summer amid interest from a host of Europe’s top clubs, including Manchester United. The Wales international scored an impressive 21 Premier League goals, earning him the PFA player and young player of the year awards, but was unable to fire Spurs to a fourth-place finish. Missing out on the Champions League has prompted speculation that the 23-year-old could leave for a club who have qualified for the competition. If Bale does quit White Hart Lane, the Red Devils will be top of the queue to sign the midfielder and his arrival would be the perfect boost as the David Moyes’ era kicks off this summer.

Marouane Fellaini

Whilst United will look to improve their options on the wing over the course of the summer transfer window, Moyes will also hope to bring in a central midfielder. Michael Carrick received plenty of plaudits for his performances last season but the Red Devils still need to strengthen their midfield options. Marouane Fellaini has a fiery reputation but also has an eye for a goal. The 24-year-old netted 12 Premier League strikes this summer but won’t feature in Europe next season after Everton finished sixth. Fellaini, who has a £22m contract release clause, wants to play in the Champions League and his former manager could tempt him to Old Trafford.

Leighton Baines

Since being confirmed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor in May, Moyes has been linked with a host of Everton players. Perhaps the most logical signing of the touted targets would be Leighton Baines. With Patrice Evra now 32, Moyes will need to identify a long-term successor to the France international if Alexander Büttner doesn’t make the grade. Baines, who is pushing Ashley Cole for an England spot, scored five goals and made five assists in 38 Premier League appearances last season. The 28-year-old would be a good fit for United and is one of the few Everton stars who could effortlessly make the transition to the Premier League champions.

Cesc Fàbregas

United had been linked with a move for Barcelona youngster Thiago Alcantara in May, but the 22-year-old appears set to stay at Camp Nou. However, the Red Devils are now being linked with a sensational swoop for another Barça playmaker, Cesc Fàbregas. The former Arsenal captain hasn’t had a fairy tale return to Barcelona despite finally ending his wait to win silverware. The 26-year-old scored 11 goals and made 11 assists in 32 La Liga appearances but the Spain international has struggled to rekindle his Gunners form at Camp Nou. Moyes could do with a big-name arrival to ensure the United supporters get behind their new manager from the very start, and Fàbregas would be a signing which would certainly appease the Red Devils supporters.

Mats Hummels

Jürgen Klopp has already lost one of his key players – Mario Götze – to Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowski is expected to follow his team-mate to the Champions League winners. The Borussia Dortmund manager will be desperate to keep hold of his best stars but could lose Mats Hummels to United. The Germany international has been heavily linked with a switch to the Premier League winners after starring in Dortmund’s run to the Wembley showpiece. With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić in the twilight of their careers, United already have one eye on the future with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all first-team regulars last season. Hummels is still only 24 and predicted to be a key member of Germany’s side at next year’s World Cup – but any deal would cost United in excess of £20m.
