Man United transfers: Martínez reveals Everton’s plan to reward Baines
Man United transfers: Everton manager Roberto Martínez says he wants the Toffees to offer Leighton Baines a new contract
Roberto Martínez says he is keen to offer Everton defender Leighton Baines a new contract amid reports of a potential bid from Manchester United.
The 28-year-old is one of the Premier League’s most-highly rated left-backs after an impressive season for the Toffees, scoring five goals and making five assists in 38 Premier League appearances.
United manager David Moyes has been linked with a swoop for Baines, who he groomed into a regular England international, but his replacement wants to secure Baines’ future at Goodison Park.
“It is very important and it’s a case of rewarding players who have been phenomenal for the football club. I think Leighton is in that category,” Martínez told Everton’s website.
“The chairman is very keen to express that and obviously I’m desperately looking forward to meeting the players.
“For Leighton, as the top performer he has been in the last few years, it is important that we reward his work and make sure that he can look forward to kicking on to the next chapter of his career with Everton.
“That’s important for the club as a whole, not just the dressing room.”
Last week, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright also indicated the Toffees won’t sell one of their prized assets to United.
“I have told David Moyes not to come back for him,” Kenwright said.
