Man United transfers: Yohan Cabaye is staying at Newcastle – Joe Kinnear
Man United transfers: Newcastle United director of football Joe Kinnear says Yohan Cabaye is not for sale this summer
Yohan Cabaye won’t be leaving Newcastle United, according to the club’s director of football Joe Kinnear.
The France international was one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers despite Alan Pardew’s men limping to a 17th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Cabaye, who scored six goals and made two assists in 26 appearances for the Magpies, has already indicated he would be interested in a move to Manchester United this summer.
But Kinnear, who was confirmed as Newcastle’s director of football on Tuesday, is adamant the Magpies will keep Cabaye, who has three years remaining on his current contract.
“We’ve got him under contract – and we want to keep all of our top players here,” he told the Evening Chronicle. “We don’t feel we have to sell our top stars.”
Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini and Senegal international Cheick Tiote have also been linked with a move away from St James’ Park.
But Kinnear, who has signed a three-year deal, added Newcastle would only sell players that are deemed surplus to requirements during the summer transfer window.
“The only players we will move on are the ones that are coming up short. You can’t have that at a massive football club like this,” he added.
“We will have to move them on. We can’t have mediocre players at Newcastle United. But we won’t be selling our best players.”
