‘Man United youngster Wilfried Zaha has great potential’
Former Manchester United winger Sammy McIlroy backs Wilfried Zaha to be a success at Old Trafford
Former Manchester United winger Sammy McIlroy has backed Wilfried Zaha to be a success at Old Trafford.
McIlroy was the final signing of Sir Matt Busby’s reign at the Red Devils, arriving just after the club had won their first European Cup crown in 1968.
Similarly, Sir Alex Ferguson’s last piece of business of a 26-year spell at United was to secure the £15m signing of Zaha from Crystal Palace in January.
The 20-year-old endured a miserable Under-21 European championship like the rest of his England team-mates in Israel, but McIlroy is confident Zaha will bounce back under new boss David Moyes.
“Wilfried has great potential. What I have seen of him I like the look of,” McIlroy told Manchester Evening News.
“I am sure he will be proud of that ‘last Fergie fledgling ’ tag as I was in my day. He has the tools to do it justice. It wasn’t a great Under-21 Championship in Israel with England for him but the failure of the side wasn’t his fault.
“He’s had a lot on his plate thinking about becoming a Manchester United player and also getting Crystal Palace into the Premier League via the play-offs.
“I wouldn’t look too much into his form for the Under-21s. Once he gets to Old Trafford he’ll be OK.”
