Jose Enrique believes Liverpool’s “very special” Philippe Coutinho can fire the Reds into the Champions League next season.

The Brazil international has been an instant hit at the Reds following a £8.5m move from Inter Milan in the January transfer window.

Coutinho has scored two goals and made five assists as the 20-year-old and Daniel Sturridge brought a new attacking edge to Liverpool’s side.

And Enrique is confident the young South American can make a telling contribution to the club’s bid for a top-four finish next term.

“Coutinho is a very special player,” Enrique told the Liverpool Echo.

“His vision and his passing is incredible and he’s an amazing lad as well.

“It was really good to have him in the team and he proved to be a great signing.

“For me, Coutinho was the best player in the Premier League in the second half of the season.

“He’s still young and improving but I think he will be very important for us next season when we will fight to get into the top four. Hopefully he will help us achieve our target of the Champions League.”

Enrique added that Coutinho and Sturridge have laid down the marker for the impact which Brendan Rodgers’ summer signings must have to be deemed a success.

“We will have some new players as well to help us next season and if they do as well as the two players we signed in January then we will be in a great position,” he added.

“As well as Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge was on fire. He scored lots of goals and showed he has all the qualities needed to be one of the best strikers in the Premier League.”
