Ricardo Carvalho has backed Jose Mourinho to enjoy a successful second spell in charge of Chelsea and admitted the Portuguese coach’s final season at Real Madrid “was not a happy one”.

Mourinho was officially unveiled at Stamford Bridge on Monday after signing a four-year deal to take over in west London for the second time.

And Carvalho, who played under the 50-year-old at Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid, believes that he will transform the Blues back into Premier League title contenders next season.

“He is a special coach for me,” Carvalho told Chelsea’s website.

“Last year I thought was not a happy one but this is the right move for him.

“He has the respect of everybody at Chelsea, the fans love him and the players know how he works.

“He is a great coach and gets results. Chelsea can improve their consistency in the league and I think he will do that.”

Defender Carvalho, 35, joined Monaco on a free transfer from Real Madrid last month.
