Fowler: Liverpool’s summer signings must emulate Coutinho & Sturridge
Robbie Fowler hopes Liverpool's summer signings can have the same impact as Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge
Robbie Fowler says he hopes Liverpool’s summer signings can have the same impact as Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.
Brendan Rodgers parted with £12m to sign Sturridge from Chelsea before the Reds snapped up Inter Milan’s Coutinho in a £8.5m deal in the January transfer window.
The former Blues striker scored 10 top-flight goals in the second half of the campaign, while Brazil youngster Coutinho gave Liverpool’s midfield a new lease of life.
Rodgers has already snapped up Kolo Toure on a free transfer, while Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas is expected to a complete a switch to the Merseyside outfit.
And Fowler hopes the pair, and any other arrivals, can have the same impact.
“I don’t really know too much but I’m sure the manager has done plenty of homework. If they are anything like the signings we made in January then we could be onto a winner,” Fowler told Liverpool’s website.
“Two great signings in January totally galvanised the club and probably took us to another level. Hopefully these players that have come in, and hopefully there will be a few more, will raise the bar.
“I’m happy with everything Brendan is doing, I think he has been great for the club. In terms of progression, we got more points last year than the year before and we scored more goals than the year before.
“Obviously we conceded two or three more goals, but I’m totally optimistic – as long as we keep progressing and going the right way.”
