Simon Mignolet is a fantastic signing, says Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler
Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler believes Simon Mignolet will prove to be a "fantastic" addition for the club
Robbie Fowler believes Liverpool’s new signing Simon Mignolet will prove to be a “fantastic” addition to the Anfield ranks.
The 25-year-old finally sealed a reported £9m move to the Reds on Tuesday, penning a long-term deal with the 18-time English champions.
Mignolet kept an impressive 11 clean sheets for struggling Sunderland last season, and the Belgium international will provide competition for Pepe Reina and Brad Jones.
And Fowler, who played with great Reds shot-stoppers of the past including Bruce Grobbelaar, reckons Mignolet is a good signing for his former club.
“I think he was a great ‘keeper last year. You’d have to look at his nationality as well – the flux of Belgian players in the top leagues and top teams is frightening,” Fowler told Liverpool’s website.
“He performed well last year in the Premier League, made some great saves, and obviously he wants to be the Belgian number one and playing in the Premier League is certainly going to stabilise that.
“I think it’s a fantastic deal.”
Mignolet becomes the first Belgian to play for Liverpool, and the former Sunderland goalkeeper is looking forward to representing the Reds.
“It’s something to be proud of – the first Belgian to play for a big club such as Liverpool,” Mignolet said.
“It’s a big club and when you arrive it’s a big thing. I’m very pleased to be here and I’m looking forward to getting started. The first training [session] will be very early and I’ll be happy to be there.
“I tried to keep this as quiet as I could because there are a lot of things that have to be finalised before you sign. I kept it quiet because I know my friends and family, they’d get excited. But they’re happy and hopefully they can come over for a lot of the games. I think they will be proud.”
