Paolo Di Canio has told Sunderland fans that there is a “huge amount of work” going on behind the scenes at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats look to strengthen their squad.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet finally completed a move to Liverpool on Tuesday following weeks of speculation over the 25-year-old’s future.

Sunderland have signed winger David Moberg and teenage striker Duncan Watmore so far this summer – and Di Canio insists that the club are planning to strengthen further.

“I would like to assure our fans that there is a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes,” said Di Canio.

“Our aim is to build a competitive squad for the new season and this deal will give us further ability to strengthen the side.”

Di Canio also paid tribute to the departing Belgium international Mignolet, who made 101 appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats.

He continued: “Simon is a fantastic footballer, a fantastic professional and a fantastic lad and I would like to personally thank him for his contribution to the team last season.

“He was crucial to what we achieved and he goes with the very best wishes of everyone at the club.”
