Tottenham transfers: Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert urges Christian Benteke to stay, promises the striker regular football
Paul Lambert has urged Christian Benteke to stay at Aston Villa to ensure the striker continues his meteoric rise by playing regularly.
The Villa forward, who joined in a £7m deal from Genk last summer, scored an impressive 19 goals in 34 appearances in his first season in the Premier League.
Unsurprisingly, Benteke’s form has led to speculation that he could be set for a move away from Villa Park this summer, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur touted destinations.
But Lambert, who took charge of Villa after leaving Norwich City last summer, reckons his young forward would be best served staying at the Birmingham outfit.
“If you take that gamble to move to one of these huge clubs, then you might not play as many games,” Lambert told TalkSport.
“Footballers want to play. If they’re hungry enough, then that’s half the battle. The pressure on a young player moving is high.
“He’s still a young lad learning the game and developing into a man.”
Benteke has scored six goals in 14 appearances for Belgium and will feature for his national side at the Under-21 European championship this summer.
