Jamie Hampton believes she is still to play her best tennis despite beating Lucie Šafarova 3-6 7-6 (1) 6-4 to book her place in Eastbourne semi-finals.

The 23-year-old has followed up a run to the last-16 at Roland Garros with an impressive Eastbourne so far, dismissing world number four Agnieszka Radwańska before beating Šafarova on Thursday to reach the semi finals.

Hampton battled against a strong a opponent and the weather, and was a set and a break down, before battling back in the second set and coming through 2-1.

Hampton said of the weather: “We were playing basically in a cloud. There was so much moisture in the air and the court was so slick I was having a hard time with my footing and my movements.”

Despite another good win, Hampton seemed determined to keep her feet on the ground: “I don’t think I’m playing anywhere near my best. I think I’m, as a player, developing as well. But I am playing good tennis.”

However it will become increasingly difficult for her to ignore the hype if performances continue – Hampton is now the third-highest ranked American woman on the tour behind Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens.

Despite her rise to prominence, the world number 42 is taking it just one match at a time: “I still have two matches to go. Got two tough opponents coming up. I take one match at a time.”

Hampton will now take on Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the Eastbourne final.
