Yaya Sanogo: Arsene Wenger visit convinced me to join Arsenal
Yaya Sanogo has revealed that a personal visit from Arsene Wenger was the final factor that convinced him to join Arsenal
Yaya Sanogo has revealed that a personal visit from Arsene Wenger was the deciding factor which convinced him to agree a transfer to Arsenal.
The France Under-21 international is expected to sign for the Gunners this summer after turning down the offer of a new contract at Auxerre.
And the 20-year-old said that Wenger came to see him in Paris to convince him that a move to The Emirates is the right decision for the striker.
“Rudi Garcia [then Lille coach] called me many times and it made me hesitate a lot,” Sanogo told France Football.
“He [Gilles Grimandi] had been to see me many times at Auxerre. And then, one day, we met in Paris at a hotel.
“I was very impressed. Wenger had come to see me directly in Paris. He told me that I would have my chance and reassured me about my injury.
“He said he had followed me for many seasons. It was this trip that was decisive in my decision. I opted for Arsenal.”
Asked about Arsenal’s interest in Sanogo last month, Wenger said: “We are advanced with him but it is not done. I am very confident [of signing him]. He is a young, promising striker who is a big talent.”
