David Villa will join Atletico Madrid this summer after Barcelona confirmed they have reached an agreement for the transfer of the striker.
The 31-year-old had been linked with Premier League duo Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in recent months – but the forward has opted to stay in Spain after Barça announced a deal which could be worth up to €5.1m (£4.39m) on Monday.
Barcelona have added a clause in the deal in which they will be the recipients of 50 per cent of any future transfer fee should Villa be offloaded during the next three seasons.
Villa, who joined Barça in the summer of 2010, has played 119 times for the Catalan giants, scoring 48 goals: 33 in the Spanish League, eight in the Champions League, six in the Spanish Cup and one in the Spanish Super Cup.
One of Villa’s first games with his new club could be against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup later this summer, between last season’s league and cup winners.
