Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen out of pre-season tour
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen confirms he will miss the north London side's pre-season tour of Asia
Thomas Vermaelen has confirmed he will miss Arsenal’s tour of Asia as the Gunners captain recovers from a back injury.
The 27-year-old was reported to have aggravated a long-standing problem while on international duty with Belgium last month.
It means the centre-half has been forced to miss Arsenal’s pre-season tour, with the skipper not part of the 24-man squad travelling to Jakarta.
“Unfortunately, due to a back injury I can’t join my team mates on the Asia Tour the next few weeks,” Vermaelen wrote on his Twitter page.
“I will be staying in London to receive the right treatment. Of course I will do my best to return on the pitch soon, and I will keep you posted on my progress.”
Arsene Wenger will also be without Spanish duo Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal after the pair were involved in La Roja’s run to the Confederations Cup final.
Other absentees include new signing, Yaya Sanogo, is currently playing for France at the Under-20 World Cup in Isreal, while Gervinho has not flown out due to sickness.
