Arsenal transfers: Chelsea launch Gonzalo Higuaín bid
Arsenal transfers: Chelsea are reported to have launched a bid to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín
Chelsea have made an offer to Real Madrid to sign Argentina international Gonzalo Higuaín, according to reports in Spain.
Although the quantity of the bid submitted by the Premier League club – now managed by former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho – has not been disclosed, Los Blancos are holding out for a fee of around €40m (£34.5m).
The player himself, who is also a target of Arsenal, has already confirmed his ex-boss’s interest in him, telling his closest advisers: “Mourinho wants me there”.
After seven years at the Santiago Bernabeu, Higuaín is seeking a summer move from the club.
The 25-year-old is unsatisfied at not being afforded the playing time or the role he feels he deserves in the Madrid team, while he has also been left unhappy at the La Liga club’s failure to fulfil its promise of an improved contract.
Following Madrid’s final La Liga fixture of last season, he publicly acknowledged his desire for a transfer.
At the beginning of the summer, Higuaín appeared close to joining Juventus; however, the Serie A club moved to sign Carlos Tevez to play alongside Fernando Llorente.
The Argentine has also been a target for Arsenal, but the London club have not met Real Madrid’s financial demands. Now, Chelsea have joined the race for his signature.
On Wednesday, Mourinho confirmed that Chelsea had made an offer to Manchester United for Wayne Rooney. United are unwilling to sell, and Mou – who has already strengthened his attack with the signing of German Andre Schürrle – has turned to plan B: Gonzalo Higuaín.
