Arsenal transfers: Gonzalo Higuaín ‘edging closer to Gunners move’
Arsenal transfers: Gonzalo Higuaín looks set to play for the Gunners next season after north London club up bid to £23.1m
Gonzalo Higuaín looks set to play for Arsenal next season, with widespread reports claiming that the north London club will pay Real Madrid a fee of €27m (£23.1m) for the striker.
The figure, slightly more than the Premier League side’s initial offer of €24m (£20.5m), falls below the €30m that Madrid had been seeking for the Argentina international.
According to reports in Argentina, Higuaín is expected to fly to London on Thursday or Friday to put pen to paper on a deal with the Gunners.
Meanwhile, Spanish television cameras spotted the player arriving at Madrid-Barajas Airport on Thursday morning.
Higuaín’s father Jorge said on Wednesday: “We have been given permission by Real Madrid to negotiate with Arsenal.
“I will luckily be able to see my son in the Premier League soon.”
Higuaín is expected to earn around £100,000 a week at The Emirates, putting him alongside Theo Walcott and Thomas Vermaelen as the top earner at the Premier League club.
The striker was also a target for Juventus, but the arrivals of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente at the Serie A club have seen the prospect of a move to Turin fade – and have left the Gunners on their own in the chase for his signature.
Higuaín scored 16 goals and made six assists in 28 La Liga appearances last season, taking his tally to 122 strikes since joining the club from River Plate in 2007.
