Arsenal transfers: Maxime Gonalons concentrating on Lyon
Arsenal transfers: Lyon's Maxime Gonalons says he is focused on his current club but left the door ajar for a potential summer move
Maxime Gonalons insists he is focused on Lyon but the midfielder left door ajar to a potential move to Arsenal this summer.
The 24-year-old has emerged as one of Lyon’s key players over the past two seasons, helping the club win the Coupe de France in 2012.
Gonalons scored four goals in 42 appearances in all competitions last season, attracting interest from the Gunners and Serie A outfit Napoli.
The France international is aware of speculation linking him with the Gunners, and despite committing his future to Lyon, the skipper admitted the situation could change rapidly.
“I’ve seen it from afar, followed it on the internet,” Gonalons told Lyon’s website.
“There are lots of rumours, even if certain things are true. Playing for a club like Lyon, I know that I am in the public eye, that other big clubs watch us.
“I know the club have confidence in me and that is important. I am concentrating only on OL, but in football anything can happen very quickly.”
Gonalons also spoke of his desire to secure a spot in Didier Deschamp’s France squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
“The goal I am focused on is the World Cup,” he added.
“I was very disappointed (to miss the recent friendlies). The coach made his choices, he decided not to take me and he had his reasons.
“I didn’t feel quite so good towards the end of the season and it allowed me to rest my head a bit because the season was long and hard. Being captain asks a lot of questions of you and that drains your energy, so that’s one reason I was not quite so good in the final months.”
