Arsenal transfers: Napoli hope to complete Júlio Cesar deal
Arsenal transfers: Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis hints the Serie A side are close to sealing a deal for Júlio Cesar
Aurelio De Laurentiis has hinted Napoli are nearing a deal to sign Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
The Brazil international has been widely tipped to leave the relegated Hoops this summer and the Gunners were favourites to sign Cesar after he expressed his desire to remain in London.
However, Napoli appear to be leading the race to land the 33-year-old, who won five Serie A titles during a seven-year spell with Inter Milan.
“Something more will be known tonight,” said De Laurentiis.
On Tuesday, QPR manager Harry Redknapp ruled out the possibility of Cesar leaving the west
London side on a season-long loan deal.
“It’s absolutely pointless,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “What’s the point loaning a player and then he comes back to you the following year on massive wages.
“He’s in his prime at the moment and wanted by many clubs around the world so now is the time really. We need to move on.
“If he wants to leave then he goes and we sell him. Napoli are not short of money. They’ve just sold a player for £54million so if they want him then they’ve got to do a deal.”
“Let’s do a deal that suits the football club rather than just doing deals that suit agents and other people.”
