Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere: Emirates Cup a chance to lift a trophy
Arsenal's Jack Wilshere says the Emirates Cup is a chance for the Gunners to "lift a trophy" ahead of the new league season
Jack Wilshere says Arsenal are relishing their tests against Napoli and Galatasaray, as well as the “chance to lift a trophy”, when the Emirates Cup kicks off this weekend.
The Gunners are hosting the competition at their famous Emirates Stadium after the tournament in north London was cancelled last year due to the Olympics.
Wilshere is currently on the road back to full fitness after undergoing a minor ankle operation earlier this summer to remove a metal support pin in his right foot.
And the 21-year-old is relishing the chance to get his hands on some silverware – albeit a pre-season tournament trophy – ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
“We missed it last year,” Wilshere told Arsenal’s website. “It seemed like something was missing from pre-season.
“It’s a good cup and the fans love it. It’s a chance to lift a trophy too and there are always good teams there. You get that good block of pre-season in and you build your fitness up ready for that.
“We’ve got Napoli and Galatasaray this year so it’s going to be a test. That’s when you really up your fitness.”
