Ashes 2013: Joe Root deflects praise onto his England team-mates
Ashes 2013: Joe Root credits his England team-mates after a 347-run win against Australia in the second Test at Lord's
Joe Root preferred to deflect praise onto his England team-mates after the hosts wrapped up a comfortable 347-run victory over Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.
The newly-instated opening batsman produced his finest performance in an England shirt, posting an impressive 180 runs in the second innings to all but hand his side the win.
But the Yorkshireman, who also took two wickets, insisted that his innings was just part of a brilliant collective performance from England.
“I’ve loved every minute of it, it’s been a great Test and the lads have played really well,” said 22-year-old Root.
“Hopefully we can take it on to Old Trafford. The most pleasing thing is that everyone has contributed and played their part.”
Root also expressed his disappointment at not reaching the 200 run mark, but said that coming away with the win was more important than anything.
“It would have been nice to get 200 but the main goal was to get a lead of 600 and take it from there. I’d swap 200 for an Ashes win any day of the week.”
