Aston Villa transfers: Five clubs who could sign Christian Benteke
Tottenham transfers: Alex Rea takes a look at five clubs who could sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke this summer
After missing out on their top transfer target David Villa after the Spaniard joined Atletico Madrid on Monday, Andre Villas-Boas will no doubt be on red alert after Christian Benteke handed in a transfer request. With Emmanuel Adebayor failing to impress the Tottenham faithful last year, and reported interest from abroad, the Spurs boss could well launch a bid for the 22-year-old striker. The north London side were left short in the attacking department last season and Villas-Boas has outlined a new forward as a necessity. The Belgium international managed an impressive 19 goals in his first season in the Premier League, and he could provide the all important extra firepower to propel Spurs into the Champions League next season.
Jose Mourinho is a reported fan of the big Belgian striker as he looks to bolster his forward line. With Fernando Torres’ future at Chelsea in severe doubt under the returning boss, it would be no surprise to see the Portuguese man switch his attentions to the powerful forward. With the departure of fan favourite Didier Drogba last year, Mourinho is keen to unearth the Ivorian’s successor. Romelu Lukaku’s impressive form during his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion could be enough to convince the former Real Madrid boss that he need not look elsewhere. However, after seemingly missing out on Paris Saint-German target Edinson Cavani, Benteke could be the man to fit the bill.
With prized asset Luis Suárez sounding out a move abroad, Liverpool could be tempted to enter the running for the gigantic forward. Despite the lack of European football at Anfield this season, Benteke could be the ideal fit for Brendan Rodgers as he looks to invest in young talent. Liverpool will be all too aware of the dangers that Benteke can pose after he scored three fantastic goals for Villa against the Reds last season. Unlike £35m flop Andy Carroll, Benteke is an extremely skillful player with blistering pace and movement. The £25m-price tag that has been slapped on the Belgium by Villa owner Randy Lerner could deter the Anfield outfit.
Liverpool’s immediately dismissed Arsenal’s £30m bid to lure Suárez to Anfield, while Gonzalo Higuaín’ proposed move to The Emirates is currently stalled over the player’s proposed wage demands. It means Arsene Wenger could join the hunt for Benteke. With a reported £70m to spend this summer, Arsenal could certainly afford to acquire the services of the forward and Wenger is desperate to add some much-needed goals to his side. The attraction of regular Champions League football could be enough to persuade the Belgian star to head to the Emirates in favour of their North-London rivals Spurs. Nevertheless wages could again be an issue as it is being reported that Benteke wants £140,000-a-week, a staggering increase from his current wages.
Atletico Madrid are rank outsiders for the Belgian, especially with David Villa agreeing to sign this week. However, Diego Simeone has big chunk of cash to spend following Radamel Falcao’s move to Monaco and he could be looking to add another forward to the ranks in order to mount a serious challenge for La Liga’s top prize. With Villa not getting any younger, Benteke would represent a fair investment with a possible sell on value exceeding the current asking price given his young age.
