Branislav Ivanović believes Chelsea’s showdown with Manchester United in their second Premier League fixture won’t decide the title but can give the Blues vital confidence.

Chelsea appointed club-favourite Jose Mourinho as their new manager in June as the Portuguese coach looks to restore the Blues to the top of English football.

Meanwhile, defending Premier League champions United have placed their faith in David Moyes after Sir Alex Ferguson’s shock retirement after a 13th league crown.

And Chelsea take on the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge on 26 August, and the Serbia international is eyeing the clash as a chance to lay down a marker for the coming season.

“The game will not decide if we’re going to be champions but it will decide a lot of things about the confidence and about the team, it is a very important game for us,” Ivanović told
Sky Sports.

“I think everyone inside Chelsea is very excited and looking forward to the season’s start because we are full of motivation.

“There are a lot of fans and supporters waiting and who want the Premier League to start again.”
