Chelsea are set to sign Marco van Ginkel after the Blues confirmed they have reached an agreement with Vitesse Arnhem over the transfer of the midfielder.

In a short statement, the Blues said that the 20-year-old will join the west London club subject to a medical, agreement of personal terms and legal documentation.

Van Ginkel joined Vitesse when he was just seven years old and has progressed through their academy. He made his debut for the club in April 2010 and his international debut for the Netherlands senior team came in November last year.

He made 33 Eredivisie appearances last season, scoring eight goals as Vitesse finished fourth in the league – their highest position since 1998.

Van Ginkel last season won the ‘Dutch Talent of the Year’ award as the best footballer in the Eredivisie under 21 years old.

The midfielder will become new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s second signing since returning to Stamford Bridge, following the arrival of Andre Schürrle last month.
