Chelsea transfers: Rooney is our only target, declares Mourinho
Chelsea transfers: Jose Mourinho confirms that Wayne Rooney is the Blues' only transfer target this summer
Jose Mourinho has said that Wayne Rooney is Chelsea’s only transfer target this summer after confirming that the Blues have lodged a bid for the Manchester United striker.
The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford after it was claimed that the striker had a transfer request rejected by the Red Devils towards the end of last season.
Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that they had tabled an official bid for the forward but dismissed suggestions that Juan Mata or David Luiz were offered as part of a potential deal.
Now, Mourinho has revealed that the west London club now see Rooney as their top transfer target this summer ahead of the new season.
“I think that this situation is clear – nothing is a secret anymore,” Mourinho said. “The official bid is just about a certain amount of money and doesn’t involve players.
“We want the player. We made the bid and now we have nothing more to say. Now it’s up to Manchester United.”
Asked if Chelsea had made any other bids, Mourinho said: “No, and we won’t.”
Asked whether it is now “Rooney or bust”, he replied: “yes.”
Rooney scored 12 Premier League goals for Manchester United last season.
Chelsea’s statement released on Wednesday read: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.
“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is currently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United.”
