David Moyes: Wayne Rooney is not bigger than the club
David Moyes insists that Wayne Rooney is not more important than Manchester United amid the speculation over his future
David Moyes has insisted that Wayne Rooney is not more important than Manchester United amid the continuing speculation over his future.
The 27-year-old striker’s situation has been a source of constant headlines in recent weeks after it emerged that he had a transfer request turned down by the Red Devils towards the end of last season.
Rooney has been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks, despite Moyes’ insistence that the player in not for sale.
And the Manchester United manager is keen to move the focus away from the forward and back onto the club as a whole.
“I’ve got to ensure it’s not just him and we don’t concentrate on him. Manchester United isn’t about Wayne, Manchester United is about the team, the club,” said Moyes.
“We are talking about him now and rightly so but what I won’t allow is Wayne Rooney to become more important than the club and the team because that’s the heart of it.
“This is a chance for me to get Wayne right back to where he was. That is the challenge and that’s a challenge I want to take on. He’s got a major role to play.”
