Gareth Bale has dropped his biggest hint yet that he is set to stay at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the summer by emphasising his “great working relationship” with Andre Villas-Boas.

The Wales international’s future has been a source of seemingly constant speculation this summer following Spurs’ failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The 24-year-old, who scored 21 Premier League goals last season as Spurs finished fifth behind Arsenal, has been linked with both Real Madrid and Manchester United.

However, the PFA player of the year appears to have indicated that he will remain at White Hart Lane by talking up his relationship with manager Villas-Boas.

“We have a great relationship,” said Bale. “Last season we had a great campaign and obviously we came up short but we had a great working relationship on and off the field.

“We chatted quite a lot about tactics and stuff like that. He definitely got the best out of me last season and hopefully can again.”

Villas-Boas recently praised Bale, who scored Spurs’ winner in a 1-0 friendly win over Swindon this week, for his improvement in the second half of the season.

“There was a moment last season when Gareth came to me because he was not comfortable out on the pitch,” said Villas-Boas last month.

“I do not know if it was my response or that he was glad to relieve the stress, but after that he became confident and played with freedom. He felt important and finished the year in style.”
