Kolo Toure admits he was surprised to learn of Liverpool’s interest in signing him after the defender completed his free transfer to Anfield on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Ivory Coast international has signed a two-year deal with the Reds after leaving Manchester City following four seasons at the Etihad Stadium.

And when asked if he expected to seal a move to a club of Liverpool’s stature at this stage of his career, Toure replied: “Honestly? No.

“When you get to 32 it’s always difficult to find a big, big club like Liverpool. For me it’s a great challenge and I’m looking forward to it.

“I will do my best. I will fight and do everything to show that I am still a good player.

“The club is massive and the history of the club is amazing. I’m here to try and do my best and see what I can bring to this fantastic football club.”

The defender also believes that the Merseyside club are moving in the right direction under Brendan Rodgers.

“The club is improving, the manager is doing a really great job and I think this season is going to be better for Liverpool, definitely,” he continued.

“The manager’s plan is simple: he wants good footballers, but good men as well, who can bring the club to the top. You do that through hard work and I’m here to work really hard and listen to anything he tells me to improve the team.”
