Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers: Iago Aspas is a real competitor
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says new signing Iago Aspas is a "real competitor"
Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool striker Iago Aspas is “a real competitor” and can help foster a winning mentality at the Merseyside outfit.
The 25-year-old completed a £7m switch to Anfield from Celta Vigo last month, with the forward penning a long-term deal with the 18-time English champions.
Aspas caught Brendan Rodgers’ eye after scoring 12 goals and making seven assists in 34 appearances for Celta Vigo in La Liga last season.
And the Liverpool manager is confident Aspas will prove a successful signing and help build a winning spirit at the club as the Reds aim for a top-four finish this season.
“When we sat down last year we felt we needed to bring more of that mentality into the group – players with quality but also players with a winning mentality,” Rodgers told Liverpool’s website.
“Iago is a real competitor but he’s also got quality as well. We’re really looking forward to seeing him in action.”
In June, Aspas expressed his delight at sealing a move to a club of Liverpool’s stature and his determination to do well at the Anfield outfit.
“It wasn’t a tough decision at all,” said Aspas after completing his move to Liverpool.
“I’m really happy to have come to a big club like this one.
“Having weighed up all my options for this window, a massive club like Liverpool was always my first choice.”
