Henrikh Mkhitaryan says he wants to ensure Borussia Dortmund don’t regret signing the Shakhtar Donetsk man after completing a move to the Champions League runners-up.

The 25-year-old completed a reported €24m (£20.7m) move to Dortmund last week after being heavily linked with a switch to Liverpool throughout most of May and June.

However, Mkhitaryan admitted he was thrilled to join the Bundesliga outfit and set his sights on repaying their faith this season.

“I hope that Dortmund never regret this transfer for a second, and that they don’t think any cent is wasted,” Mkhitaryan said at a news conference.

Mkhitaryan also moved to play down comparisons with Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze, who left Dortmund for the Bundesliga champions last month.

“He is a very good player, but he’s a different type of player to me,” he added.

“Mkhitaryan is Mkhitaryan, and Dortmund is Dortmund. This atmosphere, these fans – it is unique in the whole of Europe.

“I’ve joined a very good team and the club have taken very good care of me, which makes it very easy and is very important for a new player.”
