Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers plays down speculation suggesting the Reds could make a move to sign Xabi Alonso
Brendan Rodgers has played down speculation suggesting Liverpool will make a bid to sign Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso.
The Spain international spent five years with the Reds, winning the Champions League and FA Cup, before the former Real Sociedad captain sealed a £30m move to Los Blancos in 2009.
Rodgers has been looking to sign a midfielder this summer, with Ajax youngster Christian Eriksen a reported target, as well as the 31-year-old Alonso.
But although the Liverpool manager heaped praise on Alonso for his past performances at the Anfield outfit, Rodgers described the reports as pure speculation.
“There have been probably 100 players linked with Liverpool, and Xabi Alonso has been one of them,” Rodgers said at a news conference.
“I’ve read many names from many different countries, and there have been many outstanding players. Xabi was someone who was an incredible player for the club, a wonderful role model for Liverpool.
“He’s in a different moment in his career at Real Madrid and has been one of many players linked with the football club.”
