Liverpool transfers: ‘It would be a surprise if Luis Suárez joined Arsenal’
Liverpool transfers: Michael Owen believes Luis Suárez would be making a mistake if he swapped the Reds for Arsenal
Michael Owen believes Liverpool striker Luis Suárez would be making a mistake by quitting the Reds for Arsenal.
The Gunners have launched two unsuccessful bids for the South American forward but the north London side are reportedly weighing up an improved £42m offer.
Earlier this summer, Suárez spoke of his desire to have a “change of environment”, with the 26-year-old thought to be desperate to play in the Champions League this season.
But Owen, who scored 158 goals for Liverpool, reckons the Reds are a bigger club than the Gunners and doubts Suárez would taste more success at The Emirates.
“Arsenal are a fabulous club and have got a great heritage, but Liverpool are as big – if not bigger,” Owen said.
“I’d be very surprised if he were to move to Arsenal. Madrid or Barcelona would make more sense.”
He added: “From Suarez’s point of view you can understand him if he wants to reach the absolute pinnacle of the game – that’s playing in the Champions League. Liverpool obviously are not in that at the moment.
“Truthfully, can you really see Arsenal winning the Champions League next season or going into the later stages? Unless they buy a good few players then I can’t.”
